What is PD Testing?
In higher voltage insulating materials, partial discharges can be created within flaws, cracks, voids, and imperfections of the material due to the inherent voltage stresses. This known characteristic of PD has been used for years to identify insulation problems in electrical equipment and cabling before it leaves the factory floor. Until recently, this highly sophisticated, “PD testing” has been limited to factory and laboratory environments. With recent advances in analytical software and instrumentation, this technology can now be applied in the field to identify and locate insulation problems.
